Since 2008 — 500,000+ Analyses Worldwide

About TRITON — Reef Science Pioneers Since 2008

From a family lab in Düsseldorf to 5 laboratories on 4 continents. This is the team behind 500,000+ reef water analyses — and the science that changed reef keeping forever.

Where it all began

From a Family Lab to
the World's Reef Authority

TRITON Applied Reef Bioscience is a German / Australian family-owned reef science company founded in 2008 in Düsseldorf by Ehsan Dashti and his wife Linda. Ehsan grew up in a family of scientists — his father a chemist, his mother a pharmacist — and recognised an opportunity to apply rigorous science to an industry built on guesswork.

Ehsan founded TRITON while studying chemistry and production technology. TRITON introduced ICP-OES water testing to the aquarium hobby — a laboratory method capable of measuring 45 parameters at parts-per-billion precision. Since 2008, TRITON has processed over 500,000 water samples, building the world's largest saltwater reference database.

The Dashti family continues working in development and laboratory operations today — maintaining the personal dedication that sparked a global revolution in reef keeping. TRITON operates without external investors, reinvesting directly into research and product development. No shortcuts. Just science.

"We wanted to replace trial and error with conscious control. Reef keepers deserved better than colour charts and guesswork."

Where science meets the sea

Research at the Great Barrier Reef

TRITON operates a fully equipped ICP-OES research laboratory in Cairns, Australia, directly adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef — the only aquarium company with a dedicated field research division on the world's largest reef system. The team doesn't theorise about coral chemistry — they dive it, measure it, and translate findings directly into solutions for your aquarium.

The research vessel Calliste, custom-built in Europe and named after a daughter of the sea god Triton, enables access to every reef habitat — from turbid inshore zones to pristine outer barriers.

Heat Resilience

Studying coral species survival under thermal stress conditions.

Freshwater Influence

Natural freshwater effects on reef chemistry and coral health.

Tidal and Seasonal Nutrients

Nutrient fluctuations and coral feeding patterns across tidal and seasonal cycles.

Seasonal and Geographic Variations

Trace element changes across seasons and reef zones.

Coral Spawning

Spawning triggers, timing, and chemistry correlation research.

Parasite Research

Parasite interactions with water chemistry and coral immunity.

Latest Discoveries

From Mud to Marvel: The X-PAND and N-FUSE

Fish poo might not sound exciting for aquarists, but the TRITON team discovered that different reef zones are home to many parrotfish — and they eat and excrete a lot. Like grazers on a grass field, their excrement becomes a natural, nutrient-rich food source for corals, enriched by the parrotfish's digestive process. This principle directly inspired N-FUSE, a carrier that delivers nutrients derived straight from our reef research.

While exploring turbid inter-reef zones, our team also noticed corals reacting intensely whenever sediment was disturbed. Eighteen months of research later, we developed X-PAND — a feeding trigger that can reduce coral food requirements by up to 70%.

This is where real reef science meets real aquarium solutions.

"Modern reef keepers often don't question who's giving them advice. We started in 2008 focused on high-end reef chemistry and analysis—but ask me about fish taxonomy, and I'm not the expert. Knowing the difference matters."

What we believe

Science Demands Transparency. So Do We.

01

The Amounts Make the Toxin

Every element can be beneficial or harmful. Precision isn't optional — it's essential. That's why we measure to parts per billion.

02

Fighting Misinformation

The biggest problem in reef keeping? Taking advice from unqualified sources. Even when we can't share everything, we work to earn trust, share what we can transparently, and invite scrutiny.

03

Conscious Control

Before TRITON, reef keeping was expensive trial and error. We transformed it into predictable science — and we keep improving the standard.

04

Community-Driven Progress

Every test contributes to our database. Your success improves everyone's recommendations. Together, we're writing reef science.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

TRITON Applied Reef Bioscience was founded in 2008 by Ehsan Dashti and his wife Linda in Düsseldorf, Germany. Ehsan, who studied chemistry and production technology, grew up in a family of scientists — his father a chemist, his mother a pharmacist. What started as a passion for reef aquariums evolved into the company that introduced ICP-OES testing to the aquarium industry. Today, the Dashti family remains actively involved in development and laboratory operations. The team includes marine biologists, chemists, and aquarists with decades of combined experience.

TRITON operates five ICP-OES laboratories on four continents: TRITON-US in Los Angeles, United States (North American headquarters), Fernwald, Germany (headquarters and European hub), Cairns, Australia (Great Barrier Reef research and development laboratory), London, United Kingdom (UK and Ireland hub), and São Paulo, Brazil (South American hub, established in 2024). This makes TRITON the only aquarium testing company with a truly global laboratory network — and the only one to have expanded beyond its country of origin.

Three things set TRITON apart. First, scope: 5 laboratories on 4 continents with 500,000+ analyses since 2008 — no other company matches this scale. Second, research: TRITON operates a dedicated research laboratory and vessel at the Great Barrier Reef, generating reference data from the world's largest reef system. Third, integration: TRITON doesn't just test water — the same company develops the supplements, the method, and the personalised recommendations based on your results. Testing, understanding, and acting come from one source.

Yes. Since 2020, TRITON operates a fully equipped ICP-OES laboratory in Cairns, Australia — the only ICP facility of its kind in Queensland — located directly adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef. Our research vessel Calliste enables the team to access a wide range of reef habitats, from turbid inshore zones to pristine outer reef systems. Current research includes coral heat resilience, tidal nutrient fluctuations, seasonal trace element variation, and coral spawning triggers. These findings directly inform the recommendations you receive with your ICP results.

Yes. TRITON was founded in 2008 by Ehsan and Linda Dashti and remains family-owned and family-operated today. The Dashti family — with roots in chemistry and pharmacy — continues to work in development, quality control, and laboratory operations. There are no external investors. This independence allows TRITON to prioritise long-term research and product quality over short-term profit, which is why the company reinvests in projects like the Great Barrier Reef research division rather than marketing campaigns.
